BakeSpace FAQ & Help Guide

✨ What is BakeSpace?

Launched in 2006, BakeSpace.com was the first food-themed social network and recipe swap on the web. It’s an independent, grassroots community created by and for people who are passionate about cooking, baking, and all things food-related. Members can create and share recipes, get answers to all their cooking questions, publish and sell interactive cookbooks through the Cookbook Café marketplace, and connect with home cooks from around the world.

BakeSpace.com is also home to BakeBot, the first AI Kitchen Assistant designed to help home cooks with cooking-related questions, generate recipes, modify existing recipes, scan and archive recipe cards and files (even handwritten ones), and even guide you step-by-step through the cooking process with our first of it's kind - voice-activated cook mode.

Over the years, BakeSpace.com has earned numerous industry accolades, including 18 Webby Awards and nominations, multiple w3 Awards from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts, and the “Outstanding Use of New Technology” award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP). In 2024, BakeBot

BakeSpace.com was founded by Babette Pepaj, who still does most of the custom support emails so she can meet members personally and make sure they get the help they need fast.

🍪 Why 3 Sites? BakeSpace.com, Blog/Shop & BakeBot Pro

What's the Difference? Here's the Scoop:

  • BakeSpace.com: Our main hub for food lovers! Here, you can swap recipes, connect with fellow home cooks, and dive into features like your own online kitchen and our AI-powered BakeBot. Your BakeSpace account gives you access to all the fun right here.
  • BakeSpace Blog & Shop (where you are now): This is where we share inspiring stories, fun updates, and unique items in our shop—like custom mugs with your username on it that celebrate your love for baking! Since this shop runs on Shopify, you'll need a separate login to make purchases. Don’t worry, it’s quick and easy to set up!
  • BakeBot Pro: This standalone and streamlined site is all about our premium AI kitchen assistant. Whether you’re creating recipes, managing your pantry, or scanning handwritten cards, BakeBot Pro takes your culinary creativity to the next level. FYI - because we haven't connected these two sites yet, please create a new account and we can connect the two accounts later.

Each platform offers its own unique experience, so explore them all and make yourself at home! 😊

🍳 How do I create an account?

It's easy! Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to our login page.
  2. Fill out the quick registration form with your email, username, and password.
  3. Click "Join" to complete your registration.

Once you've registered, check your email for an activation link. Simply click on the link to activate your account, and you’re all set! Enjoy exploring and sharing recipes with the BakeSpace community.

🤔 Help! I signed up, but I can't access my account (plus, common errors).

The most common error we see if users who use their email address or used a period in their username. The period will break your profile link. It will loop your profile endlessly so you can't go to your profile. If this happened, let us know. We can fix it easily. :) Plus the username is public - you don't want to use your email address. :)

Now, back to other common help:

You've registered... now what?

Did you get the activation email? If no, No worries! While we know it can be a bit of a hassle, activation helps keep spammers out. Here’s how you can fix it:

  1. Check your inbox for an email from "bakespace" and look for the welcome message with the activation link. If you find it, click the link once to activate your account. (If you double-click, read the next tip below! 😉)
  2. If you can't find the email, simply email babette@bakespace.com, and we’ll activate your account for you.

I received the welcome email and clicked on the validation link, but I still get the "no member associated with this account" error.
This usually happens if you accidentally double-clicked the activation link. No worries! Here's what to do:

  1. Click on the "Login" link at the top of this page or the "Join" tab in the menu, and sign in as a member.
  2. You might need to clear your browser cookies if the error message is cached.

What if I forgot my password?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.bakespace.com/loginjoin and click the "Forgot Your Password?" link above the orange "Login" button.
  2. Enter your email address, and we’ll send you a new temporary password right away!
  3. If the temporary password doesn’t work, it might be because your account isn’t activated yet or the error is cached in your browser. Clear your cookies or check the guide above on how to do that.

Pro Tip: If you’re copying and pasting your password, make sure there’s no extra space at the end—it can cause issues. If you still can't log in, send us the password email to babette@bakespace.com, and we’ll manually reset your password to something easier.

Every time I click on my profile, nothing happens.
That most likely means you used your email address as your username. Happens all the time so you're in good company. We can fix that for you. Just send us a message at babette@bakespace.com from the email you registered with and let us know what username you'd like us to swap that out with.

Let us know if you need help— we're happy to get you back in!

I was editing my profile and then all of a sudden I was banned. WTH?
First of all we apologize for the no-nonsense response. Sites like ours get a slew of bad actors trying to ruin it for everyone with bad content that is not cooking related (let's just say, not safe for any family website). We built our own custom tool to spot spam and block automatically so our team doesn't spend all day deleting them (and more time with actual members). Sometimes the AI makes a mistake. If you find yourself banned and have a good reason for it, we can fix it. Please send us a message with the details and we'll see why the tool marked your account as spam. Again, this is an automated tool that fights off about 300 bad accounts a day. It's way better for all of us to have that tool in than to let unsavory content on the platform. We hope you understand. If you'd like us to build that same tool for your website -- let us know.

📝 How to Upload a Recipe

Posting a recipe on BakeSpace is a breeze! Here are your options:

  • To use our traditional "Manual Upload," click on the "Upload a Recipe" link on your profile.
  • For an even easier way, use BakeBot! You can paste your recipe directly into the box or upload your files (and recipe cards), and BakeBot will automatically format it for you. You can also paste your recipe into the pop-up chat on every recipe page and ask BakeBot to save that recipe to your account. If your recipes have been destroyed, BakeBot will even fix the recipe and add the missing text

How do I edit my recipes?
To edit your recipe, go to the recipe page and click “Edit” (make sure you're logged in to see the word "edit"). Then, you can make changes to your recipe and save them when you're done.

Can I make a recipe private?
Yes, you can! When uploading a recipe, simply mark it as “Private.” If you’ve already posted the recipe and want to change it to private, just click “Edit” and select “Private.” Private recipes won’t appear in BakeSpace’s recipe index and won’t be searchable by others, but you can still include them in cookbooks you create with Cookbook Café. Any private recipes added to a cookbook will only be accessible to the member to saved or purchased your cookbook.

How do I save recipes? From others & modified ones from the pop up chat?

To save recipes, you have two options depending on whether you want to save the original version or an adjusted one:

  • Saving the original recipe: Simply click the "Save" button at the top of the recipe page. This will save the recipe as it is (without any changes you made in the BakeBot chat). Once saved, you can find it under the "Saved Recipes" tab in your profile.
  • Saving an adjusted recipe from BakeBot: If you've customized a recipe using the BakeBot chat pop-up, saving your version is just as easy. Once you're happy with your changes, type "Save Recipe" in the BakeBot chat box. BakeBot will save your updated recipe directly to your account, keeping it separate from the original.

This allows you to save both the original recipe and any variations you create, so your collection stays flexible and personalized!

📖 How to Create a Cookbook

Creating a cookbook is quick, easy and free. The first step is to create a BakeSpace.com account (which is also free) by clicking the “Join” button in the menu bar above. Once you’re logged into your account, go to your profile and click on the green "Make a Cookbook" link next to your "edit profile" link.

Then follow the instructions to name your cookbook, select your cookbook categories, upload photos/video and assign your price. You can also select your cookbook's privacy level: Private, Public and Group.

If you already have recipes on BakeSpace, you can "attach" them to this cookbook (and any you create and remix in the future).

If you don't have your recipes on BakeSpace yet, save your cookbook to "draft" and then every time you upload a recipe to BakeSpace, you'll be able to add it to any of your cookbooks before you save.

If you're planning on making a "community or group cookbook," select the "Group Cookbook" privacy level which will create a "group link" so you can share it with others and have them upload their own recipes to your cookbook without having to email you the recipe.

Pro Tip: Recipes in cookbooks are displayed in the order they were uploaded.

When you're ready to publish, click the "publish" button and you'll see a message that says your cookbook has been sent to our team for review (just to make sure it's an actual cookbook) and will be published in a couple of days. If you'd like to check in on your cookbook, send us an email at babette@bakespace.com anytime. We can launch a cookbook same day if you let us know you need it now.

Please let us know if you'd like some help promoting your cookbook. If it's for a charity or event, we can promote it to local media.

🛒 Selling a Cookbook

How long does it take for my cookbook to get approved and appear in the storefront?
Our team of editors goes through each new cookbook to ensure it functions properly and adheres to our copyright and content guidelines. Once you create your cookbook and click “publish” you will receive an email acknowledging we’ve received your cookbook. Once the cookbook is approved by our editors (usually in 24 hours), you’ll receive a second email letting you know your cookbook is now in our storefront. Still have questions, please feel free to send us an email requesting an update if you have any questions or concerns regarding the review process. Send your message to babette@bakespace.com, and include your BakeSpace username and the name of your cookbook.

I want to start building my cookbook, but I don’t have all my recipes prepared. Should I wait or start today?
Once you start building your cookbook, you can select the "save draft" option to save your work and return to finish it later. Once you’re finished, click on the “publish” button on the cookbook edit page to let our editors know it's ready to be published.

Can I get a hard copy of my cookbook?
Nope... but therein lies the beauty.

While we still love our old-school paper cookbooks, Cookbook Cafe's unique digital publishing platform makes it possible for authors to create, market and even distribute their cookbooks for free. Even the least costly on-demand print publishing is expensive (printing on dead trees is pricey, as is shipping, etc.). Plus, if you’re like us you don’t have much room on your shelf for too many more cookbooks. Cookbook Cafe allows you to continue building your recipe collection without taking up a single inch of shelf space.

Does each author retain the rights to his/her cookbook when it's published and downloaded via Cookbook Cafe?
Absolutely... you own the rights to 100% of your content. That said, by using Cookbook Cafe you give us permission to post a link to your cookbook, the cover image and any recipe on our social sites, in our newsletters, apps and blog -- so long as we give you credit and link back to your original cookbook page.

I want to upload recipes for my cookbook, but I don’t want them included in the general BakeSpace.com recipe index. How can I set this up?
Simply mark your recipe "private" on the "edit recipe" page. Once you're done, you can add private recipes to any cookbook you create. Only folks that download your cookbook will be able to access those recipes.

How much should I charge for my cookbook?
As the author, you set the price for each cookbook you create. You can give it away for free, or sell it for profit/fundraising. Prices may range from $0.99 on up (in one dollar increments). Whatever you decide, you're the one calling the shots.

Why is it a good idea to publish a free cookbook too?
Creating a free cookbook is a great way to cross promote your paid cookbooks. Every cookbook published has a link back to the writer’s BakeSpace profile and a list of all your cookbooks. Free cookbooks allow you to reach a wider audience and build a fan base.

How much does it cost to create, publish and market a cookbook using Cookbook Cafe?
It's free to create your cookbook and market it through the Cookbook Cafe storefront. Your cookbook is digital, which means there's no cost for printing or shipping. The only time you incur a fee (aka split revenue) is when you sell a cookbook. You pay nothing when you give your cookbook away on Cookbook Cafe for free.

How much will I make from each cookbook I sell?
If you sell your cookbook for profit or fundraising you'll split the revenue 50%/50% with BakeSpace and its payment processing partners.

The 50% we keep covers costs related to:

All payment processing fees. BakeSpace pays all credit card processing fees on sales made through the online storefront.

The cookbook builder and storefront

While the cookbook builder and storefront are both free to use, they weren't free for us to develop. We also provide nightly backups of all your cookbook data so your collection is safe and protected.

Cookbook approval and coordination

Our team at BakeSpace reviews each cookbook that's submitted to make sure it's fully functional and ready for approval. While we love reading cookbooks filled with great recipes, managing the approval process takes serious time. Finally, you'd have to find a way to market and sell your app without the benefit of an established cookbook marketplace. The team here at Cookbook Cafe is proud to offer a first-of-its-kind all-inclusive publishing solution to help home chefs create, market and sell their cookbooks to the world!

How do I track my cookbook sales?
As the author, you have access to an online dashboard with up-to-the-minute download, sales and payment processing information for each cookbook you publish. You can access your personalized dashboard via your profile -- look for the "My Cookbook Sales" tab above your recipe section.

When and how often do authors get paid?
All author accounts are reviewed on the first of each month. Authors who reach a minimum of $25 in sales during the previous month (or since their last payment) will be sent a check within 30 days (delivery times may vary based on recipient's location). Checks are issued in U.S. Dollars. Authors can access their account information, sales data and payment status anytime via the Cookbook Cafe author dashboard. Other payment options may be possible upon request. We can also pay you through paypal, venmo or zelle (if you need those last two, please type in your profile (in the paypal area - one of those other two options so we can reach out to to you to get your info).

What information is required to process payment?
Authors need to supply their full name, mailing address. We cannot send payment without this information.

What's the best way to promote my cookbook?

Share! Use the share buttons on your online cookbook profile page to post it on Tik Tok, Instagram, Pinterest, X, Facebook and any other social site you like. Also send an email to your friends and family members with a link to your cookbook page.

🛍️ Buying Cookbooks

What makes building a library with Cookbook Café different from collecting run-of-the-mill eBooks or online cookbooks?
All of the recipes in each cookbook you download on Cookbook Cafe are indexed individually by title, ingredient, author and other searchable criteria. This means you'll never have to search your downloaded cookbooks to find the recipe you're looking for. Most ebooks don’t have a search component making finding a recipe inside the ebook when you need it virtually impossible.

How much does it cost to download a cookbook?
Cookbook prices are set by each author. Many are free, and the rest range in price from $0.99 and upward. Many of the cookbooks that aren't free have been published by nonprofit organizations to assist their fundraising efforts. So the proceeds go to help a worthy cause.

How do I download a cookbook?
Simply click on the "Free" or “Buy" button under the image of the cookbook you want to download. If you're not logged in, the site will ask you to login. Also, you're saving the cookbook to your BakeSpace account. It is not an actual download to a file on your computer.

No problem—just click “Edit” on the recipe page and change its visibility setting to “Private.”
  • Private Cookbooks: Creating a digital cookbook with our Cookbook Café platform? You can choose to keep it private! This is perfect for family-only recipe collections or personal projects you’re not ready to share with the world.

👩‍💼 Who owns this place and how do I contact Babette the founder?

Who owns BakeSpace? Is the site part of a big corporation?
Unlike the big recipe database sites, BakeSpace was built from the ground-up as a true grassroots community. It was created in 2006 by media producer (and avid baker) Babette Pepaj. Prior to launching BakeSpace, Babette worked for more than a decade producing and directing reality TV programming such as MTV’s "The Real World" and "Road Rules."

What was the inspiration behind BakeSpace?
The inspiration to create a food community came after Babette completed her first cake decorating class and tried to connect online with others who loved to bake. At the time, there weren't any food-themed social networks to connect home cooks in real time. MySpace had just started and Twitter wasn't hatched yet. So with no tech experience, Babette created the type of online community she herself wanted to join. Less than two months later, BakeSpace.com was born! Today, it's the largest (and tastiest) independent food social network on the Web. If you want to connect with Babette, you can reach her at babette@bakespace.com.

🏛️ Legal Stuff

Who owns the content I upload to BakeSpace?
You retain ownership of all content you upload to BakeSpace... plain and simple. When you upload a recipe, you agree to have it posted to your BakeSpace profile. You also agree to allow BakeSpace to feature that recipe (with credit to you as the author) on social sites and in any BakeSpace app, blog or newsletter.

Why was a recipe I posted deleted from my account?
We delete content only if it violates one or more of our terms and conditions. Violations may include use of another person's copywrited material after they have requested it through our DMCA policy, obscene language or imagery, content that is abusive or insulting, and slurs against someone based on age, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, etc. We also reserve the right to delete any content determined to be spam. Spammers often try to use our recipe pages to promote and provide links to their products. Note that if a recipe does not include a list of ingredients and directions, it will likely be deemed as spam and deleted.

What if I want to post a recipe I didn't create?

While a simple list of ingredients can't be copyrighted, recipe directions, descriptions and photos are considered intellectual property, so reposting such information without permission may constitute a copyright violation. Please see our Copyright Policy for more info.

In general, if you alter another person's recipe by adding your own information, it should be okay to post. But if you've done a direct copy-and-paste with no alteration, you should ask the original author for permission before reposting their recipe. Also keep in mind that while many recipe sites and food bloggers appreciate attribution and a link to their original content, don't assume that simply adding a link is a substitute for getting their permission. It's always best to ask first.

I have an original recipe, but I want to use someone else's photo I found on the Web. Is this okay?
When in doubt, leave it out. Photos "borrowed" from another website, cookbook or magazine are copyrighted material. Please review and adhere to our Copyright Policy.

Someone posted my copyrighted recipe or photo on BakeSpace.com. How do I get it removed?
BakeSpace follows strict DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) guidelines. If you believe your copyrighted material has been used on BakeSpace without your permission, please contact babette@bakespace.com. We will investigate and do our best to resolve the problem ASAP. BakeSpace members agree to our copyright and liability policy as a condition of membership. BakeSpace.com and BakeSpace, Inc. are not liable for content uploaded by members.

Emails from Legal teams must follow our DMCA policy or they will be ignored. As a UGC site, we are indemnified from copyright claims based on content our community uploads -- just like Facebook, X, Instagram, etc. We are not editors and do no create the recipes. We have added a recipe photo generator to help our members create images and not need to grab images off the web.

🚫 Notice About Deleted Recipes and Banned Accounts

If your recipes were removed, it’s likely because they were flagged as not meeting our guidelines. This includes:

  • Content that isn’t a recipe or food-related.
  • Placeholder text intended for other purposes later.

Please note: We do not remove recipes based on viewpoints, politics, or ideologies. Our focus is solely on ensuring content aligns with our guidelines to keep the community clean and enjoyable for everyone.

If your account was banned, it may be because our system automatically flags profiles posting non-food-related content (e.g., unrelated services such as plumbing, escorts, etc.). Unfortunately, some use platforms like ours for unrelated marketing or SEO purposes, which goes against our mission.

We’re committed to maintaining a positive, food-focused space for our members and appreciate your understanding. If you have questions, feel free to reach out!
